Greg, please wear safety glasses.  Anytime you are swinging a hammer is the time for glasses.  Most hammer faces are hardened steel (very brittle) and there is the possibility of a chip flying off like a bullet.  There is also the danger of the razor sharp end of the wire going out of control or flying off when you cut it.
