The implication that it is the US and its allies that are responsible for all or most repression and denial of human rights in the world is misguided and misinformed. Some of the most repressive governments historically and recently have nothing to do with US policy making or hegemony. The US certainly has played a role in the support of some repressive regimes, but the problem is infinitely more complicated and multifaceted than can be solved by adopting an attitude of just treat everyone with respect and dignity all will be well or turn the other cheek. Simple minds (and I don't mean yours Gordon) seek simple solutions. May I offer this: Black or White Wouldn't it be nice If the world was black or white If this was always wrong And that was always right We wouldn't have to think, no We could just go on our way Knowing that the rules Would never change from day to day Wouldn't it be nice If our simple little minds Had only to consider Who is mean or who is kind We could avoid all those complexities That really make us frown And taxes our gray matter And turns us all around Wouldn't it be easy If it were only rain or shine And taking our umbrellas Was just a matter of design We could judge all other people They are bad, or they are good No room here for compromise Behave just as you should But could we hokey pokey Though the "in" precedes the "out" But where turning yourself all around Is what it's all about.
