The Terminator (was:Re: Bridgetop Extravaganza Revisited)

That is really good Jon. I just did the string seating on a Baldwin and I
had to use Joe's tool near the struts and push the string sideways as you
can't get enough sideways angle for the tap with the hammer and rod. The
purpose, as I see it, is not to seat the string to the bridge but to "kink"
the wire so it makes a nice bend around the pin. It's amazing how the string
leaps over to in line with the smallest tap. Don Mannino showed pictures of
a string that had been put on for a couple of weeks and removed. Essentially
it was still a straight wire, the bends around the pin dissappeared. Remove
a wire that has been "seated" and you can locate where the pins were by the
kink in the wire. Don thought the amount of drop in pitch of the string
after seating should be measured and the string should be that many cents
sharp before seating. I guess is that would put the kink in the proper place
to start. Any thoughts on this?
Again, nice tool, thanks. I'll be looking through the spider bin for the
right screw driver.
