Speaking of small details from the obscure past, I happened to pull a '84 Mahavishnu John McLaughlin LP off my shelf, which I hadn't heard in years. ("Mahavishnu", WB 25190-1) On one of the tracks, Mitchell Forman is listed as playing the "Yamaha 'Blow Torch' Acoustic Piano", as well as Fender Rhodes and Yamaha DX-7. The studio was Ramses Studio, Paris the dates ca. 4,5/84. The only acoustic piano I find on that rock "anthem" is in the head-in, mixed way back, and playing not much more than incidental "harp strums", such as Lyle Mays would have done. A good, clear sounding piano, but certainly not a rock'n'roll beast. The rest of the track is Rhodes for solos, and DX-7. Anybody know what the "Yamaha 'Blow Torch' Acoustic Piano" was? I'd guess it was a particular piano available to the studio, with a voicing which could "cut through". Bill Ballard RPT NH Chapter, P.T.G.
