There is no lost motion.  That was the first thing I checked.  It was news to 
me that others have had problems with key leveling staying the same.  Most of 
the key leveling I've done is down at the store where I work, and I haven't 
noticed any of the keyboards becoming uneven, even after they are purchased 
and are in their new homes.  Most of these are new pianos, however.
    Perhaps, as you suggested, Don,  rotating the old felts when I replaced 
them is exactly the problem.  I will try replacing the old balance rail felts 
with new ones, and I'll iron them first!  
    As to the environment, i.e., the fireplace, I hope no one minds if I 
forward your emails to them, in hopes they reconsider the placement of the 
instrument.
