Richard,
I would opt for your plan of piano wire clamping as best you can.
Removing/Installing one of those boards is a Bear! Wouldn't suggest removal
of the board. Those boards are prone to distortion/bridge roll, etc. If you
are retaining the original board, then, do it good, but make do. From the
pics, everything looks pretty doable. Even with a distorted board, etc.,
these babies can have a sweet, albeit small, sound.
