Hi Terry, Since most sheet goods and a fair selection of lumber come in 8' lengths, I might venture to suggest that perhaps 8' might be an appropriate length. Sould accomodate a 'D' board with a few inches left over. I didn't build mine quite that big, but could easily expand it if need be. I think I made mine 6' long and it wouldn't be hard to put on an 'addition' if need be.
