Joe,

Hantavirus is carried by the Deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) which
occurs all over North America.  It is found in higher concentrations in the
four corners area (CO, NM, AZ, UT) though.  Contact with the mice, their
feces or fluids can lead to this respiratory disease, which is often fatal
because of its failure to be identified quickly (flu-like symptoms that most
people would ignore).  We all should be cautious when cleaning out and old
piano.  I actually did a fair bit of work with Deer mice in Michigan and
Wyoming back when I was a Biology grad student.
