---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Dear Friends, Two weeks ago I heard from New York City Chapter members regarding Tom Sheehan's health. Last Friday he had an operation to remove his esophagus (due to cancer) which, even in the best circumstances, would involve two months' recuperation before he could work again, and a full year before his recovery would be complete. I spoke to him several days before the operation and he was very optimistic about the procedure. Below I have copied several post-operative updates I had received,as well as today's, which isn't good news. Let's hope and pray he pulls through; Tom is a real treasure. Tom's surgery went very well no complications even though it was a long surgery nearly 8 hours. He was in ICU all weekend so my information is limited. Hopefully he will be getting his room tomorrow and as soon as I know where he is going to be I will get the word out. Tom is welcoming all phone calls and visitors. I already told him before hand that I was going to let him rest the first few days so I will go maybe Wed. or Thurs. I received your E-mail and greatly appreciate that there is support for Tom if need be. Right now Tom says he is okay, but I still may hold a 50/50 raffle or something for him. Thank you, Ray Kampermann Date: Tue May 14, 2002 07:31:26 AM US/Eastern To: "J Patrick Draine" <draine@attbi.com> Subject: Re: update on Tom? Patrick here is an e-mail I received from Tom's sister this morning after I e-mailed you. Dear Ray, Sorry for the delay in posting an update, as you can imagine this has been a grim time for all of us Sheehans. Tom's surgery went very well. According to his team in the recovery room it was a "routine" esophogealectomy. The surgery took 8 hours from start to finish and there were no unforseen complicaitons. Tom has been in ICU since 5/11. He is on a respirator. I am hoping to hear tomorrow that they will remove this and move him to a regular room. Once there he will be permitted visitors however we are asking everyone to limit their time to 10-15 mins, and to please be sure that you do not have any active or subsiding cold symptoms. Hopefully he will also be able to talk on a phone, but we do not yet know if he will have any temporary paralysis of the vocal cords. This is a real possibility. On my dear brother's behalf thank you for your love and concern, I will share a copy ot this email with him tomorrow, Tue! s, 5/14. I will let you know when he can have visitors. Patrick, as of Friday morning Tom is still in ICU and will be for a while. He has been on a respirator the whole time and when they tried to remove it there where complications. It does not sound good, but this is all the information I have as of yet. It will be days before we can visit or even call him. I will keep you posted.
