No real dispute here, I'm just speaking from my practical experience
(having tried "smudging" a unison to hear its effects). There may
exist a physical basis for what you're describing, Ric. Del would
know more about it than I would.
I seem to remember from the Weirich SciAm article ("The Coupled
Motion of Strings" '79?), after the strings on a unison settled into
the aftersound stage, that if their motion was out-of-phase, the
bridge would pull them into phase. I somehow also remember that
slight differences in tuning were also rased by the same coupling
process. I really should dig out the article before opening my mouth.
