The only good place for a Phillips screw is down a dark hole ( like on some electonics applications ) where one can't see the head and the hole lines up the driver. They can't be adeqautely tightened for structural use, so should not be in ANY type of cabinetry!!!! But I think their prevalence today is to disquise the fact that they are ( with the exception of the hadened type) also very weak crap!!!!! take any old screw from a 75 year old piano and hold it in the palm of your hand, then compare it to a similar size from your friendly "True-Value" dealer. The new ones will weigh noticeably less, and snap off if torqued much!!!!!! A real pain in piano work! For this reason I see nice old screws as precious little gems. The old ones were cut on a screw making lathe. The new ones are stamped (somehow). I can't explain the weight difference, as "steel" should be "steel". Perhaps they're "Air-Puf'd". In any event, I think most are sold as Phillips, as this prevents adequate torque from being applied to reveal their limitations! Political Correctness prevents me from revealing whence this junk originates: suffice it to say that they are from " overseas ". A diabolical plan to make America fall apart, if you ask me !!! That and the archless shoes they send over here, so we'll have an army of flat-feets when they invade!!!!
