I presume you are aware that polyurethane is not the same as polyester. 
Polyester is a hard plastic, and difficult to work with to do it right. With 
as much damage as you indicated, I would highly recommend you get the lid to 
someone who knows how to do polyester repairs, and just not someone who can 
touch up a small scratch with lacquer based products.
