Scott,
Good thing I noticed you live on "The Big Island"! If it had been someone in
the States, I would have told them to do their homework.<G> This is a VERY
olde publication: "TUNER'S Pocket Companion" by Oliver C. Faust. On the
bottom page 23, (first section), he States: "4th regulate the dip, which in
the American Square is three eighths of an inch, and in the Old English,
(sq.gr.action), two eighths."
This book is based on the "compiled from lectures of Oliver C. Faust,
Principal of the Faust School of Tuning, Boston, Mass.".
There is an awful lot of information in this little book, (key work
"Pocket"), but most is archaic or simply b.s.
However, I did an 1850's Chickering Square, that had an English Style action
in it. Although, on some expert advise, that the dip on a Chickering MUST be
3/8", after much screwing around, the only dip that would work, was 1/4",
("two eighths")!!!!! Since that time, I don't get too hung up on Dip.
Whatever works, works, IMHO. <G>
But, I digress. The book was purchased from, (I believe), APSCO, 28 years
ago. It does not have an original publishing date. It simply says"Reprint
Edition". Whether or not it is still available, I don't know. (It's late and
I don't want to go digging through my catalogs!)
Hope this answers your query.
Best Regards,
Joe Garrett, RPT, (Oregon)
