Just restrung an S, #88 was 51 mm! How about that. However, just got a new L, 
#88 = 48mm.

The plate position is indeed determined by the block fitting, then the action 
to that, which explains the wandering capstan lines. However, the soundboard 
goes in after the plate is fitted, and thought I remembered being told that 
the soundboard/bridge was indexed to the plate. I know that doesn't explain 
the different string lengths. Maybe somebody out there remembers better than 
I do.
