I walked in to tune a piano I hadn't seen before, in the day room of a community seniors' center. The room was crowded with people waiting for lunch to be served. I set down my tools, grabbed hold of the lid, and threw it on the floor behind the piano. Not one of my shining moments. Made a quick trip to the hardware store to find brass hinges as the originals were gone, altogether. I found the hinges, but my dignity is still AWOL. Yes, if I have anything to contribute to this list , it is to echo this imperative: ALWAYS check the hinge pins on a grand. There is a grand in a local hotel with a PianoDisc which I tune regularly. The bass end is against the wall. The last time I tuned it, I (once again) craned my neck to check the hinge pins. Yes, I was wondering: "why am I doing this... am I compulsive or what?" Surprise! One of the pins was missing. How did it happen? No one at the hotel knows. Happened to have one in my kit that actually fit.
