Rachmaninoff wouldnt hit the piano anywhere near as hard as some of these clubbers out there, and if he did... he'd last as a pianist for maybe a couple years. That being said... as long as you dont destabilize the tuning by whacking too hard... no its not counterproductive... its just not neccessary.
