List,

Today's Boston Globe newspaper has an article about the
pilings supporting Boston's Trinity Church.

Much of Boston was built on reclaimed swamp land in the 19th
century and this article describes the engineering of building on this
unstable ground.

They drove 4500 spruce pilings 12" in diameter 35 'long to
the bedrock 126 years ago.

It seems the key to resisting rot is to keep the spruce wet
which has been done successfully in this case.

Anyway, no mention of what kind of spruce was used, but I
wonder how much "Tone wood" is buried down there.

Come to think of it there is a renowned pipe organ in the
church that may benefit tonally from those little tone circles in the
pilings.
