I have worked on one of these.
The mandolin was a set of fine brass rings with
material threaded through them. When lowered in front
of the stings they assumed a position so the top edge
would strike, the material would muffle, then the
bottom of the ring would strike the string.
Produced an interesting sound, unlike a simple
honky tonk set up.
The orchesta was a "tremelo" effect.
threaded light tiny wooden balls only slightly
larger then the spacing between individual strings
,one for each note were positioned to touch the
strings. They would bounce about producing a tremelo
effect.
I seem to recall there was a sostenuto,
as well as soft pedal, and sustain.
Five pedals in all.
