Leaving it in is only an option if you can't get it out.

The method of madness I use is another needle and go fishing, so to 
speak, to get the broken needle to show it's face. Then when I can 
see it, I grab it with needle nosed pliers. You could easily use some 
other pinching type device. With patience and persistence you 
shouldn't have any problems.

So far I have managed to capture all broken needles.
