Terry, German loop : 2 turns around the pin, it is more stable, nowadays I was instructed to close the loops with a brass rod and a little hammer, so the coils are tight. They always tend to unwrap a little (or a lot) but less with a German loop. And the easier method is to do them on a hook holding in a scrap of wood and attached to the piano you are working on , use the (long) free part of the string with a 90° bend in it so you can turn it around the string easier (as a crank) Even faster method that to do it with pliers, while you can use pliers to hold the string straight (useful for biggest strings, wear gloves, also) . Machines are to make bass string loops, mostly, while I see some eastern pianos with those kind of loops. I'll post a pic of the setup tomorrow. Isaac OLEG Entretien et réparation de pianos.
