Dopey to dope?

The assumption seemed to be that since the piano would not hold tune that the pins needed doping. It had not yet been determined that the pins were, in fact, loose. I find that it doesn't take much to hold a tuning pin in place. Lack of tuning stability is more likely from some other problem. I thought it wise to check all possibilities before doping the pins.

Now wait just a second here, David, how in the world will a damp chaser affect the tightness of the tuning pins on a GRAND piano? Inquiring minds would like to know.

First things first. Stabilize the environment with a DC system, if not already. If you install one. let the piano sit for 6 weeks before tuning it. Make sure the piano is not sitting over a heater vent. Make sure that perimeter and nose bolts are tight. Check the bridges for loose pins or cracked bridge. Than analyze the tuning pins as you tune it. Tune the piano and schedule a follow up in 6-8 weeks to see what's happening.

Greetings,

I have a lady I am going to see Monday who has a Kawaii grand that she claims will not hold a tuning. I never doped a pinblock before. If upon inspection the pins are loose, should I dope. Is this an unwise move?

I hear that doping only lasts for one tuning and then the obvious is inevitable, which I hear is a re-pin job. How loose must pins be to sanction a re-pinning?

Thanx,
Julie
