Hi , thanks, Joe, did you recover the hammers ? I have the Yamaha parts list for CP 70-80 and the hammer seem to be sold in complete unit, no reference for the covering, that semm a little unusual for Yamahas. There are 4 or 5 differnt kind of hammer assembly in the same instrument, but I am not persuaded we may taper the letoff as much as 1.5 in the treble (I've heard of broken strings also on those, and I have a gut feel that letoff may be a tad far to be good for Jazz and R'n R'<G> I've find the manual on line too. I believe that Yamaha grand rollers and backcheks are also artificial leather (and a very good one at that) Not cheap when they sell it for covering backchecks , for instance. I guess the tool you had to make was for the dampers lift , the action can't be extracted like for a normal grand is not it ? I tuned this CP80 in a noisy hall with the VT 100 and the tuning fall in place marvelously well (an amazing tenth's progression for that kind of beast). Never heard such clean chords on that kind of piano (I remember trying to tune 6:3 octaves in the bass ... a poem !) best regards.
