I don't have any reasons other than to insure that the bar doesn't ride the 
damper levers. As you pointed out, lost motion is regulated at the pedal. 
It should feel the same with or without being held together by the 
auxiliary damper - except for the added spring resistance of the auxiliary 
lever, which will be the same with either pedal.
