Can they play a more important role in the atypical grand? What I mean =
here is there something about the typical grand design that renders ribs =
essentially meaningless in the last octave that can be changed to =
influence this area or gain some control? Or is it the same on pretty =
much any design because the span here is just so short?

So what about the high treble? Often the top octave or more is quite =
lively, loud and brilliant.

As Ron said, lacquer. Plus the fact that ribs are essentially =
meaningless in the typical grand through the last octave.
