Don Rose writes, in response to Alan's problem counting 4 to 5 ratios:
Listen to f3 a3. Tap your knee on the fourth beat. Do that for three sets
of four beats. Then play a3 c#4 while keeping the tapping going at the same
speed. Count how many beats you hear. If it is five then it is a four to
five ratio. If it is slower then adjust c#4 until it is five.
Or play F3-A3 while saying "MississippiMississippiMississippi" [or
AlligatorAlligatorAlligator], matching the beat rate, and tapping on each "Mis". Keep
the tap going at the same rate, and say "UniversityUniversityUniversity." That's
4:5. A3-C#4 should be that.

Then speed up your MississippiMississippiMississippi to match the A3-C#4.
UniversityUniversityUniversity should match C#4-F4, and so on.
