Dave Asked: "I've seen references to whitening hide glue this way,
but are the titanium/zinc oxides effective in glues
that dry somewhat clear (PVC-E, Elmer's, etc.)?"

Dave,
To answer your question...YES! I used to ONLY use hide glue or wafers, but
have since switched to PVC-E glues, (BTW, "Sobo" is one of those.). I mix
Titanium Dioxide into the glue and store in an air tight jar w/plastic lid.
It stores almost indefinately. If it smells like vinegar, TOSS it.
In the field, white shoe dye, which comes in a nice applicator container, is
sufficient to whiten the key stick. Also, when doing any kind of Ivory
work....CLEANLINESS, CLEANLINESS, CLEANLINESS! The other criteria is
PATIENCE & CARE OF FITTING. Been doing it for over 30 years and in home
replacements can almost be as good as the shop replacements. As far as
buffing, etc., use a Dremel w/buffer and compound. Works just fine. BTW, I
have a complete KIT dedicated to ivory repair, etc.
