Please, Kurt no worry about, We all state things that we believe and one of
the first advantage of this list is to compare point of views, should differ
often, we very slowly finish having a clearer idea of what we where
rethinking of.

I find older pianos generally more stable than recent, but verticals are not
as well seated as grand's, because of their 4 feet, that should always
induce more moves with the seasons for the stress changes induced.
What is absolutely certain is that if you where to change pitch when tuning,
the old beasts will not accept it as well as modern ones because everything
is much stiffer and don't accept changes in shape easily.

For that reason after some age, if the customer have leaved the pitch drop
slightly and don't care about, I prefer to keep the piano in shape at large
and accept a lower pitch than work hard to only give him 440 or whatever,
when I fairly know he will not take my effort in consideration, or if a
change of strings is due.

On the other hand on the old pianos I service I have generally stabilized
pitch at the good level long time ago, so the drift not much.

Best Regards.

Unfortunately, no. I am so dead wrong in saying that; "wood shrinks and
grows more in its old age" that it's not even the slightest bit funny.
Please delete any message I sent to this forum with the subject header
"soundboard" on it.

  many thanks,

    Hi Kurt,

Could you please quote a study that shows this effect?
