I've only had to deal with one pianist, who wasn't a beginner----but she wasn't great, either. :-) In her case, she was having trouble adjusting to her new piano in acoustic surroundings that differed wildly from her teacher's. Her room was very live and because of that was over compensating by "pulling back." Still, it was no excuse for not playing to the bottom of the key and a better pianist would have said, "Hey, this piano is too loud, I can't get a good pianissimo from it!"
