My guess is that everyone used to tune this way before strip mutes came into popularity. I first heard about it from one of Virgil Smith's classes at the convention. Owen Jorgensen has a blurb about it in his Tuning book. My dad always tuned this way, too - even before attending one of Virgil's classes. One time I tuned a Henry F. Miller spinet using open unisons - just for the heck of it. Yuck! But I have done it successfully on Acrosonics. Most of the time on lesser pianos, I'll use the strip mute since the greater effort on my part is less noticed/appreciated by these owners. For me, it makes the treble octave much easier to hear and tune, compared to tuning all the middle strings first using the strip mute. When all the strings of the bottom note are tuned, the top note seems to "float" beautifully and effortlessly when it's in the right place. It makes decent pianos sound good, and good pianos sound great. Can't say I do it on every rental spinet I tune, but I have fewer and fewer of those to contend with; it has been a career altering educational experience for myself and my clients. Pianos seem to expand, brighten, come to life. One of my clients said his piano sounded louder. Many have said that their pianos have never sounded so good, or in tune. Very rewarding stuff, great technique. Who originated this tuning method? I may have missed something here somewhere...:-( Dave Stahl ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
