Alan,
Pekin Inn. That's good.
Caterpillar sold the site in Morton. On that site and side of 74 is a =
development of businesses, motels and restaurants. It's quite nice =
really. Also, Morton is the "other" place to be (or is that =
flee?)--lots of expensive houses have been built, which, of course, has =
driven up the cost of all housing there. =20
You would be shocked to see the improvement in East Peoria. All that =
ugly industrial stuff before the bridge (that is, on the East Peoria =
side) is gone. When we moved back to the area, I could hardly believe =
my eyes. Could it be that East Peoria looked..........good? (This =
mostly due to the revenue from the casino--a big riverboat that can no =
longer cruise because of silt in the Illinois.) The Peoria riverfront =
and downtown are really getting spiffed up, too. There's a very nice =
baseball stadium on the south edge of downtown. Right now we have the =
biggest downstate road construction project in history--improving and =
straightening out I-74 through East Peoria and Peoria. It's supposed to =
be done in five years.
Well, I guess Richwoods was good training for U of I! I graduated =
from EIU--it was a nice size--big enough to have a lot to offer, but =
small enough not to get lost. As for clicks, I think they happen =
everywhere--but are more noticeable when money is involved. I grew up in =
a small farming community in northern Illinois. My family moved to =
Bloomington when I was a senior. On my first day of school, I couldn't =
understand why everyone at BHS was wearing their church clothes. :-) =
I had moved to an affluent community! It turned out to be a great place =
for my piano business!=20

Thanks for responding. I actually did not like Peoria or Richwoods =
very much, as a teen. Most of the Richwood kids were awfully clickish, a =
few downright snobby. It was so big, it was easy to feel unknown (and to =
most people and teachers, you were!). On the other hand, I went from =
there to U of I Urbana and being in a 28,000 student school didn't seem =
much different, whereas other people--from small towns, etc.--were often =
overwhelmed. My wife always thought we should open a motel in Pekin and =
call it the "Pekin Inn." Caterpillar EVER finish their huge building in =
Morton?
