Hello Ron May,

You've had some good advice from a number of contributors. However, 
one possible cause which you might also look for is nose bolts 
contacting poorly located clearance holes in the sound board. I've 
repaired a couple of US seventies Steinway's which had this problem 
right out of the box.

If the bass area is the only section offending, it may be something 
on the board or a board/rim joint problem down the back end. If you 
suspect the bass strings it may be worth muting the set and trying 
one string at a time. If there are enough loose strings in a set, its 
possible that playing one good string can set off a rattle in the 
others.
