Scrape the paint off the top and the crud off the sides with a razor blade,
the paint can remain on the sides. Sand with 400 or 600 paper with a finish
rubbing oil or water, then burnish with 0000 steel wool or gray Scotch-Brite.
This is best done with each key held in a vise.

A slight wood hue is acceptable, at least to me it is.
