Verituner and Pitch Raises]

I have absolutely no doubt that many (most?) pianos can have their strings
pulled more than a half-step sharp - maybe even more than a full step -
before they break. I played around with a hundred-year-old rusty piano in my
shop before de-stringing. Most strings would go up to two full steps sharp
before breaking! And obviously, we have all experience the piano that can't
even go to A440 pitch without having strings pop.

But at what point does the risk of permanent deformation arise? I'm certain
that it is largely dependant on the scale - some piano scales have strings
closer to their breaking strength than others - but is there some general
rule that covers most all pianos?
