I agree with Thump.  I've had to scrub a lot of grimy black gunk from keys: 
tops as well as sides.  Schools seem to be the worst (heavy use, casual 
cleanliness).  Cleaning the keys is often one of the biggest improvements I 
can make in the field, next to tuning and tightening the bench.
