This is WAAYY off thread, but I'll keep it brief.

Thalidomide has no mercury in it, and it is not particularly toxic, even
to fetuses.  Of course it does cause birth defects -- it is a powerful
teratogen -- but that's a different thing.  FWIW, sales of thalidomide
were about $300 million last year, primarily as an anti-inflammatory
(for leprosy) and as an antiangiogenic and immunomodulatory agent for
certain cancers, such as multiple myeloma.
