>> I have had very few over the years, most people are basically honest. Most people in our business are pretty honest. But if you were dealing with the general public you'd be amazed at the number of bounced checks. John has a good plan there, one that I have followed a couple of times. If you present the check to the teller she can't tell you how much money is in the account, only if there is enough to cash it. She can also tell you if the account is active or not. If the account is actively being used it increases your chances of hitting a day when it could be cashed. One more scheme that can be used, particularly on a large check. Anybody can deposit money into any account. You can ask the teller if a $50 deposit would bring the balance up high enough to cash the check. If not 50, then how about 100, etc. So for a $50 deposit you may be able to cut your loss to $50 instead of $350. When there is, cash it. You can try every day, if you like. Up until 6 months, then it is void. If they do not have an account at that bank, then you have grounds for fraud.
