Some scanners have a "preview" option.  It scans very quickly first, at a very low resolution.  Then, you may have the option to crop the area you're scanning, so that the final, high-resolution scan only covers part of the area.

You can also open your image in the simple utility Paint (under Start | All Programs | Accessories).  Use the crop tool to select the area you want.  Copy that area (Ctrl-C), then open a new file in Paint and paste (Ctrl-V).  Save this new file as type JPEG (the default BMP makes very big files).

Sorry about the picture size. :-(  If I could figger a way to get my scanner to do them smaller, I would.<G> ('Puter Dufus Here!)
Here's another "scan". This time, the one on the right is the original configuration, which works, but has a tendency to "pop" out a lot. The one on the left is the "new/improved" model, which I just made.<G>
