S&S maintain that the split damper felts should be cut  to show "no winking"

You are quite right.  I've done this operation a couple of times, and  it 
makes a HUGE difference in silencing the "Shush" and having a more consistent  
and positive action feel in the middle of the keyboard.  Once again, this  type 
of operation--trimming the dampers--is a matter of who, if anyone, wants to  
foot the bill...
