I'm working with another tech in rebuilding a similar action from 1890. Ours has not been char-broiled :-).
 
In the first picture you sent, I noticed the hammer rest rail felt very wide. Looking at photo 3, I notice that the rest rail felt is not original, and almost drags on the hammer tails. The felt I removed was only 3/8" wide, and a little taller than what is in photo 3, and does not cover the wippen flanges. It is also very soft, not like the backrail-type material shown. I'm not sure what we're going to use to replace it. Maybe Jurgen will have something up his sleeve.
