My point is that these devices point in a definant direction relative to 
the root cause of varioius types of falsness, and that indicator could 
be looked at closer to perhaps find better ways of avoiding such 
problems to begin with.  As for your immediate question, there are of 
course alternatives fixing to mis-matched bass strings, tho that in 
iteself is not a reason to avoid using these devices. But then I have 
not advised anyone to not use them in the first place.

No doubt handy to have a few laying around.... at least at this point so 
it would seem.

What other ways?

Piano techs have never had an immediate field repair available for  
mis-matched bass strings. For the first time, we can now "fix" mis- 
matched bass strings on the spot when we discover them.

Just my opinion, but everyone would do well to add these couplers to  
their bag of tricks.
