Well, Dale, if I can encourage you more......
During my tenure (five and a half years, 1990-1995) at the university, =
there was only one visiting pianist that didn't like the "sound." She =
was a graduate student from a school with a granite tradition. =
Otherwise, the faculty was happy and all the visiting artists were =
pleased. The piano faculty were always sure to tell me the reactions of =
the visiting pianists--which certainly encouraged me! It was nice to =
work with a supportive group like that.
The recital hall turned out to be *the* place to record for the =
community. I have one CD of a truly dynamic pianist that I'm mostly =
pleased with--except the killer region leaves a little to be desired =
(darn) and I hear a few other things I wish I could back and change. It =
was recorded after my first year there (1991) and still in the thick of =
learning what to do with a Steinway. Wow, if only I knew then what I =
know now! Anybody have a time machine?
I started thinking this morning about my foundation for voicing. I =
guess we can cross out my family's Winter spinet. :-) The summer I =
turned 15, my uncle shipped a J&C Fischer 5' 8" grand my way. I can't =
remember what year it was made--I think sometime during the depression. =
The transition was tough from tinkly spinet to grand with a fairly =
mellow voice (and probably crumbling action brackets). I built muscle =
for sure, and also discovered the joy of much wider range of dynamics. =
When I went to college, I naturally gravitated toward the less bright =
instruments. I could practice longer without feeling shell shocked. I =
don't know, was it because I was also a bassoonist in the orchestra and =
not a trumpet player in the jazz band? Was it my piano professor =
pressing me to be as musical as possible? Whatever!
Press on!
Barbara
