Hi Joe, I know from personal experience that if you use distilled water and the 1/2 capful of DC water treatment that the low water light and smart bar are sometimes not functional. It has only happened once to me--but there it is. So I do recommend unsoftened tap water for the first "fill" on Damppchasers.
