Wouldn't it be that all art of end of 19 th century was called decadent
in France and in Europe ?  They said "Fin de siècle" for that trend
after romantisme, meaning, I think, the loss of the values that make a
healthy civilisation (strength and so), and the letting be of pure
useless abstract aesthetic considerations (like symbolism).
Maybe not.
