Hello Owen I had a 1897 Hientzman 7 foot to do with mortise to the rim and attached to the stretcher that I tried something different that may be helpful here. I cut about 3 inch self around the perimeter leaving the original mortise alone. This self was of original material was shaved down and turned into a butt joint with 2 inches overlapping from the new block to the old block. Once fit to the plate and positioned onto the self there are some gaps as a few mm were left to accommodate positioning the block in the piano after fitting. bottom is dammed up with epoxy putty to prevent leakage and the butt joint gaps filled with East System Epoxy. Maple Dowels put through the old/new block shelf joint every 6 inches for added strength. A few pics of this are found on my pic web page. http://davidrenaud.ca and click on piano repair pics............. Cheers Dave Renaud __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
