Tom,

Good advice from Jerry and all the others who responded.

As for the stringing, as of February, we had to do a splice, a coil, and an individual hitch pin loop. I don't think that's changed.

Make sure to ALIGN and TRAVEL all the parts in the regulation portion before trying to get them to proper specs

If you've practiced enough so that you don't have to think about things too much, but rather do them automatically, you'll do fine. The nerves can really do a number on your thought process.

I'll only add this: DON'T drink that extra cup of coffee beforehand. In fact, soothing tea might be better, as you'll have no trouble staying awake. Listen to Jobim or something equally soft on the ride over.

Think pastoral thoughts, be confident, and kick butt! Good luck.

Tom,

Here’s a suggestion.

Tonight, create a separate tool/supply bag for each section of the test (stringing tools, regulating tools, repair tools and supplies). At the start of each section, lay out the tools from the appropriate bag. This will save valuable minutes by not searching for tools. It also helps to keep you more calm and organized.

I use the Pearl River zippered mesh bags that they give out at every show.

Good luck. Bend a spoon.

List

Tomorrow I take the Technical Exam. Any advice from those of you who have gone through it?

The one question that no one seems to be able to answer is: how is the test scored? For instance, the stringing portion of the test, three tasks in 20 minutes; are they equal in scoring weight? If I get stuck and don't have time to finish one of them, which one should I leave undone?

On the tuning exam the scoring system is given to the examinees, and it was a great help in allotting time to finish various secitons. For instance, I didn't waste much time with the top or bottom octave, knowing that it was scored so lightly, and rather focused on octaves 5 and 6, and 3 and 2.

It would be great to know how to budget my time in the Technical Exam. (My examiner has not returned my phone call.)
