Duaine -- By design, Win XP is a networking operating system. Your network and the internet are quite separate. Your cable modem is talking to the internet and your router. Computers plugged in to your router are always talking to the router and to each other but only those set up to access the internet will be talking to the cable modem. At the very least you should have the MS firewall activated on your computers. However, the fact that you have a router in place provides you with a hardware firewall which is much more powerful. Make sure it is set up correctly and active. Don't worry about the router lights. They just indicate the network is working. The cable modem lights indicate that it is talking to the internet and to those computers hooked into the router that are set up for internet access. Make sure your router, and it's firewall, is configured correctly, and that you have adequate virus protection and you should be alright. -- Geoff Sykes -- Assoc. WARNING: I needed to reinstall Win XP. Not needing internet access, I installed Win XP and did not setup internet access. Guess what ???? Everytime I booted, I saw blinking lights on my router (which is connected to my cable modem). So, that means windows is accessing the internet for some reason. What I'll probably never know !!! I even went back in and checked the settings, and -nothing- was setup. Bottom line: It appears that windows is going to talk to the internet no matter what your settings are (security, privacy, etc) -- Duaine Hechler Piano, Player Piano, Pump Organ Tuning, Servicing & Rebuilding Associate Member of the Piano Technicians Guild Reed Organ Society Member St. Louis, MO 63034 (314) 838-5587 dahechler at charter.net www.hechlerpianoandorgan.com
