Steinway [non-adjustable jack] question

What the heck is the distal edge of a jack and the distal edges of a core?

I know what distal means, but it is a reletive term - what is the reference 
here?

Did you spend some time in dental school?

BTW - the proper terminology is port, starboard, aft and forward.  ;-)
