After thoroughly stripping the wood, and lightly
sanding, sponge it with water ( distilled ), let dry,
sand off ( very lightly ) "whiskers" which have been
raised, then stain with water-soluble aniline dye
stains ( also mixed into distilled water ) for
clearest, cleanest grain retention. Go get Flexner's
book.
