Steinways do make a model K actually K - 52. They are the full size uprights...next closest model is 1098. The newer model K's took the place of the older big upright, that had the double dampers in last 3 or 4 notes of treble, next to bass and treble break.
Also, Model K lids fold over, thus, negating the need for wedge to hold lid up.

Hey Now,
All the squeak diagnostic advice was interesting and informative...thanks to all. Pardon my ignorance but I never heard of a Steinway K. I 've always had trouble determining the model of these Steinways, well except the newer ones.

Steve,
The model designations of Steinway uprights is not always stamped with the serial #.
Call Margaret @ S and Sons in customer service .1-800-366-1853.
Give her the ser. # and she will give info on model, date of manufacture, orig finish and often the name and address of the first buyer or dealer .
