I have fond memories of Winifred Atwell here in Australia many years ago. I
tuned for her on quite a few occasions, when she travelled the country areas
of our state, Victoria. The rumour was in those days that she took her old
honky tonk piano everywhere with her. Not so. We used to find the old hall
piano, put some stickers on it to make it look authentic, fine tune the
piano to concert pitch, then knock the middle strings flat on the tri
chords. No one was the wiser. Everyone has an agenda don't they? She was
jolly lady until she lost all her weight, then not so jolly.
Stories, there are millions about pianists and their antics. We should all
contribute to a book about our experiences, it would make good reading, me
thinks.
